10 Jamaat men remanded in special powers act case
Court Correspondent: Dhaka, Mar-12,
A court here today placed 10 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami on one-day remand each in a case lodged with the capital’s Darus Salam Police Station under the Special Powers Act.
The 10 remanded accused are- Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, Farhad Hossain, Abdul Aziz, Mainul Islam Tuhin, Zia Uddin, Tajirul Islam, Harun Ur Rashid, Abdul Quddus Mazumder, Shahidul Islam and SM Qaium Hossain.
Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibul Haque passed the order as police produced the 10 accused before the court and pleaded to place them on five-day remand each. Defence counsels, however, argued for scrapping the remand plea and setting them free on bail.
The court also allowed a police plea to keep 48 others, shown arrested in the same case, behind bars till conclusion of probe.
Police arrested the 58 from Mirpur Capital Tower on the night of March 11 while they were allegedly holding secret meeting there.
Police said the accused were plotting to carry out subversive activities on March 26.
