HM Lijon, Gournadi:- Although Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, daughter of the Father of the Nation, has taken various steps to improve the living standards of the underprivileged and spread education, the children growing up in the Boro Kasba village housing project in Gournadi Municipality of the district are being deprived of the light of education. One hundred families live in the housing project but no school has been built there permanently. Many of these children are being deprived of the light of education as there is no school within the three kilometer area of the project. As a result, the children are falling prematurely.

According to sources, Boro Kasba housing project was constructed in 2005 on the banks of the river Palardi adjacent to the Torki port of Gournadi municipality of the district. The project was inaugurated in 2006 by the then Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Mahfuzur Rahman. One hundred families are currently living in the project. There are hundreds of children among them. Many of these children are being deprived of the light of education as there is no school within the three kilometer area of the project.

Gias Uddin Sardar, a resident of the housing project, expressed his displeasure, since there is no school or madrasa here from the beginning till now, the children of the project remain illiterate. Several residents, including Kalam Hawladar and Abdul Barek Bepari, who live in the project, said that as there was no school in the project, various organizations used to run mobile schools in the community center from time to time. But now there is no school of any organization. They further said that the children do not want to go to school as the distance of the schools from the project area is three kilometers. As a result, most of the children here are still illiterate.

Md. Abul Qasim Sardar, President of the Housing Project, said that the houses of the project are in dilapidated condition as they have not been renovated since 2005. On the other hand, the only road from Torki Char to the housing center is in a dilapidated condition. As a result, the residents are suffering immensely.

He added that since there was no permanent school in the residence, the community center of the project was used as a school by NGOs at different times. But the community center has also been dilapidated for a long time. As a result, most of the children here are deprived of education and are separated from education by joining work with family members at an early age. Residents of the housing project sought the intervention of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Minister Abul Hasanat Abdullah MP for speedy resolution of housing problems as well as construction of schools to enlighten their children in the light of education.

In this regard, Gournadi Upazila Nirbahi Officer Bipin Chandra Biswas said that appropriate steps will be taken to solve the problems of the housing project by inspecting the site soon and discussing with the senior officials.
