Bangladesh reports 88 Covid deaths, 3,629 new cases

Dhaka: Bangladesh reported 88 more deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, pushing the death count to 10,869 in the country.   After three days in a row with more than 90 deaths since April 20, the number of daily deaths dropped  yesterday.

Earlier, the death toll dropped below 100 on Tuesday after a record number of daily deaths in four consecutive days since April 16. The country’s highest-ever deaths from Covid-19 were reported on 19 April when 112 people died from the dreaded virus. The Covid-19 fatality rate now stands at 1.47% in the country.

The infection rate on Friday further dropped to 14% with 3,629 new infections reported across the country. With 4,014 new cases, the infection rate was 14.63% yesterday and 15.07% on Wednesday with 4,280 new cases. The total caseload now stands at 7,39,703.   In the meantime, 25,896 samples were tested in 349 labs across the country.  Among the latest day’s victims, 62 were men, and 26 were women. Of them, 87 died in different hospitals across the country while one died on the way to hospital.

Moreover, 53 of the deceased hailed from the Dhaka Division, 18 from Chattogram, five from Mymensingh, three each from Rajshahi, Khulna, Sylhet, and Rangpur divisions.  Also, 5,225 patients were declared free of Covid-19 during the last 24 hours, with an 87.56% recovery rate.  The Covid-19 victims’ gender breakdown shows that 8,010 of the total deceased across the country were men and 2,859 were women.  The country’s maiden cases were reported on 8 March last year and the first death from the virus was reported on 18 March that year.

India on Friday reported over 3 lakh coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases for the second day in a row, clocking 332,730 cases in the last 24 hours, according to the Union health ministry’s dashboard, reports Hindustan Times.  With this, India’s trend of registering the world’s highest daily tally continues, pushing the country’s total infection count to 16,263,695 cases. As many as 2,263 people also died of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, mounting the coronavirus death toll to 186,920.  India is second only to the United States in the total number of cases reported since the beginning of the pandemic.  Worldwide, 3,087,246 people died of Covid-19 and 145,402,540 people have so far been infected with the virus, according to Worldometer.
