Bangladesh’s COVID death toll surpasses 10,000

Dhaka: Death toll from the coronavirus infection has surpassed 10,000 mark in Bangladesh as 94 more people died of the deadly virus in the past 24 hours till Thursday .

Meanwhile, the daily infection count remained lower than that of yesterday, with 4,192 fresh cases recorded in the last 24 hours till Thursday 8am, said a press release of DGHS.

The total number of deaths has now reached 10,081 and the death rate stands at 1.43 percent.

The total number of people infected in the country is 707,362. The current positivity rate is 21.00 percent, while the total positivity rate stands at 13.83 percent, added the release.

Meanwhile, 5,915 Covid-19 patients have recovered in the last 24 hours. The total number of recoveries stands at 597,214, and the recovery rate at 84.43 percent.

Among the latest day’s victims, 64 were men and 30 were women. Of the victims, all of them died in different hospitals across the country.

Moreover, 69 of them hailed from Dhaka, 12 from Chattogram, six from Rajshahi, three from Khulna, two from Barishal and one each from Sylhet and Rangpur divisions.

Besides, 19,959 samples were tested in the last 24 hours in 257 labs across the country.

The Covid-19 victims’ gender breakdown shows that 7,499 of the total deceased were men and 2,582 were women.

Neighbouring nation India recorded over 0.2 million (2 lakh) cases in the last 24 hours while the toll from the disease remained above 1,000 for the second day in a row, according to latest figures released by the ministry of health and family welfare on Thursday. With 200,739 fresh Covid-19 cases, the highest spike in a day, India’s infection tally has reached 14,074,564 which has experts calling for tighter curbs to control the spread of the viral disease.

Pakistan on Thursday reported 118 coronavirus fatalities during the last 24 hours, more than 100 deaths for the third straight day. According to the country’s health ministry, 64,685 tests were conducted during the last 24 hours after which 5,395 people tested positive.

The overall number of global Covid cases has now surged past 138 million, an alarming figure that paints a bleak picture of the pandemic.

According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 138,056,297 while the death tally from the virus reached 2,971,539 Thursday.
