Photojournalists portray Mujib, beauty of country in group show

Professional and freelance photojournalists have displayed photographs depicting the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the scenic beauty and culture of Bangladesh in an ongoing exhibition at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the capital. Bangladesh Photo Journalists’ Association and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy jointly lifted the curtain on the exhibition titled Bangabandhu O Rupashi Bangla 2022 at the National Art Gallery Auditorium of the BSA.
Information and broadcasting minister Hasan Mahmud was present as chief guest while state minister for cultural affairs KM Khalid and Bangladesh Photo Journalists’ Association president Golam Mostafa were present as special guests at the inaugural ceremony of the exhibition Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy director general Liaquat Ali Lucky presided over the programme, which also featured awards ceremony. ‘Photojournalists take risks at work.
They enrich the history and play an important role in newspapers, which is the mirror of the society,’ said Hasan Mahmud. ‘I hope that Bangladesh Photo Journalists’ Association will have branches all over the country in the future,’ added Hasan Mahmud. ‘I hope that the director general of the BSA will include this photography exhibition on the organisation’s events calendar,’ said KM Khalid. ‘The BSA will provide the necessary support to Bangladesh Photo Journalists’ Association to help them organise this event every year,’ said Liaquat Ali Lucky. Guests also handed over awards to winners of the photography contest.
Bangladeshi photojournalist Mohammad Ponir Hossain, who works at Reuters, won the first prize while the Daily Ittefaq photojournalist Shamsul Haider Badsha received the second prize and the daily Samakal photojournalist Md Sajjad Mahmud Nayan received the third prize. Besides, freelance photojournalist Zakir Hossain Chowdhury won judges’ special award. Each winner received a crest, a certificate and honorarium money. Three late photojournalists, namely, Md Alam, Rashid Talukder and Manu Munshi were honoured posthumously.
The organisers handed over awards to the family members of the late photojournalists. Besides, three senior photojournalists, namely, ABM Rafiqur Rahman, Wase Ansari and Jalaluddin Haider were honoured at the programme. The guests along with the Bangladesh Photo Journalists’ Association members launched a souvenir and a photo book titled Bishwabandhu Bangabandhu. Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy artistes entertained the audience staging dance recitals.
Besides, Bangladesh Photo Journalists’ Association general secretary Kajal Hazra, the BSA secretary Md Asaduzzaman, subcommittee convener of the photography exhibition and competition Moin Uddin Ahmed and the BSA fine arts department director Syeda Mahbuba Karim, among others, were present at the event. Photojournalists from across the country submitted 693 photographs to the exhibition. A three-member jury board, comprising journalist Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul, photojournalists Firoz Chowdhury and Akkas Mahmud, selected 100 photographs for the exhibition, which is featuring 200 photographs.
Among them, 100 photographs depict the scenic beauty and culture of Bangladesh and 100 photos show different moments in Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s life. The exhibition will remain open from 11:00am to 8:00pm till June 6.
