Shilpakala hands over little Magazine awards

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy honoured eight editors of little magazines with Little Magazine Sammanona 2022 and lifted the curtain on a seven-day little magazine exhibition on Tuesday. The programmes were held at the National Art Gallery auditorium of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

Little Magazine Sammanona 2022 was handed over in two categories, including central little magazine, and zila and upzila little magazine. Five little magazines were selected for Little Magazine Sammanona 2022 under the central little magazine category. The magazines are, namely, Shahid Iqbal-edited Chinha, Abdul Mannan Swapon-edited Dhamani, Ejaz Yousufi-edited Lyric, Mizanur Rahman Nasim-edited Mananrekha and Obaed Akash-edited Shaluk.

Three magazines, namely, Asaduzzaman Sharkar-edited Mohakalgor published by Zila Shilpakala Academy, Rajshahi; Asit Baran Dash Gupta-edited Surmakapot published by Zila Shilpakala Academy, Sylhet; and Aranyak published by Upazila Shilpakala Academy, Kamalganj received the award under zila and upazila little magazine category.

A jury board comprising renowned researcher and the Liberation War Museum trustee Mofidul Hoque, writer and translator Abdus Selim and professor Khaled Hossain selected the award-winning little magazines after evaluating 70 little magazines published at different times from across the country and 10 little magazines published by branches of the BSA at different districts and upazilas.

Each awardee, under category the central little magazine, received a crest, a certificate and Tk 50,000 while each recipient, under zila and upazila category, received a crest, a certificate and Tk 25,000. Dhaka University vice-chancellor Md Akhtaruzzaman was present as chief guest and little magazine Amitrakkhar editor Aminur Rahman Sultan and Lok editor Aniket Shamim were present as the discussants at the programme, which was presided over by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy director general Liaquat Ali Lucky.

‘Little magazines are known for their anti-establishment stance. Besides, such magazines provide a platform for young writers to showcase their talent. Steps should be taken to promote little magazines,’ said Md Akhtaruzzaman.‘We are looking forward to organising little magazine exhibition and awards ceremony annually,’ said Liaquat Ali Lucky.

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy secretary Md Asaduzzaman delivered the welcome speech and writer Saikat Habib read the summary of an essay on the history of the little magazines.Saikat Habib thanked the BSA for organising the little magazine exhibition and awards ceremony.

Besides, the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy dance troupe entertained the audience presenting dance recitals titled Subhechchha Bhalobasha and Shahaj Manush. The seven-day little magazine exhibition is ongoing at the National Art Gallery VI. It is featuring over 800 little magazines from across the country.

The displayed little magazines include Mazhar Ziban-edited Uthon, Habibur Rahman-edited Rastrachinta, Manzu Rahman-edited Album, Sarkar Ashraf-edited Nisarga, Humayun Kabir-edited Ghunghur, Shihab Shahriar-edited Baitha, Nasiruddin Yousuff-edited Graam Theatre, Azad Noman-edited Charjapad, Islam Rafiq-edited Ikkhan and others. The exhibition will remain open for visitors till February 7.
